Ibiza-Dry Dock

Miguel Villá1966

The contrast between the liveliness of the colour and a markedly constructivist approach often defines Villá’s paintings. However, at the period when this canvas was painted colour had not acquired the self-sufficiency that it would in his later works. The buildings are structured and de-structured through cubes (as such reflecting the real architecture of traditional Mediterranean houses) and are coloured in rather than given form by the red, yellows and blues. Villá always selected quiet locations for his subjects, such as Ibiza at that date, in which nature and man’s intervention are harmoniously combined.
