Daughter of General Antonio Gutiérrez de la Fuente, President of Peru in 1829, and of Mercedes Subirats, Carolina Gutiérrez de la Fuente posed in 1854, while still very young, for the Hungarian Pavel (Paul) Petrovits. This painter, trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and later established in Lima, produced portraits on commission while also offering drawing lessons. According to tradition, this painting in romantic style shows the young girl in a magnificent white gala dress that was worn in the celebrated “Victory Ball”, given at the country estate of the then President José Rufino Echenique for the President of Congress and notable neighbors of Lima.
