Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum
University Center, United States

The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum features a unique collection of more than two thousand works that span the 70-year career of Detroit-based public sculptor Marshall M. Fredericks (1908-1998).  He is known nationally and internationally for his impressive monumental figurative sculpture, public memorials, fountains, portraits and medals. The Museum and its adjacent Sculpture Garden comprise one of the most comprehensive collections  of any single artist’s work in the world. The Museum’s holdings include plaster models, casts and carved sculptures, medals, jewelry, miniatures, drawings, photographs, site models, molds, armatures, tools, and archival materials. The Museum’s Main Exhibition Gallery features a permanent exhibit of more than 200 of Fredericks’s works, including plaster models, sketches, site models, bronzes, portraits and wall reliefs. The Sculptor’s Studio features a collection of objects from Fredericks’s former studios in Royal Oak and Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The Museum also offers two temporary exhibition galleries, archives and research reading room, classroom, gift shop, and reception area. An outdoor sculpture garden features a growing collection of 24 of his bronzes on the beautifully landscaped campus of Saginaw Valley State University.Fredericks’ philosophy for making art is best explained in a passage from his credo: “I love people, for I have learned through many experiences, both happy and sad, how beautiful and wonderful they can be; therefore, I want more than anything in the world to do Sculpture which will have real meaning for other people, many people, and might in some way encourage, inspire, or give them happiness.”
