Gold headdress that represents a jaguar face flanked by condors ML100770

Esta es una corona de oro, ornamento que coronaba a aquellos personajes que tenían el máximo poder político-religioso en esta sociedad del antiguo Perú. Por las evidencias arqueológicas de hallazgos de tocados semejantes en contextos funerarios de la costa norte del Perú, se puede afirmar que este tipo de coronas identificaban a los personajes todopoderosos, aquellos con capacidad para intermediar entre el mundo terrenal, y el mundo celeste o de los dioses, y el mundo interior o de los muertos. La iconografía de estos adornos frontales corresponde claramente a símbolos de contacto entre los mundos. En el caso de este frontal, podemos ver un rostro de felino que está coronado por una forma de creciente o tumi, flanqueado por dos aves. El felino es el animal que expresa el poder terrenal, y está flanqueado por cóndores, que por ser aves están asociadas con el mundo superior, pero por sus hábitos alimenticios carroñeros están vinculadas al mundo de abajo o de los muertos. This is a golden crown which was worn by those personages who exhibited the greatest political and religious power in the Moche society of ancient Peru. For the archaeological evidence of similar findings of headdresses in funerary contexts in the northern coast of Peru, we can say that this type of crown identified the powerful personages, those with the capacity to mediate between the earthly and the heavenly world or world of the gods, and between the inner world or world of the dead. The iconography of these frontal ornaments clearly corresponds to the symbolism of contact between the worlds. In the case of this frontal piece, we see a feline face topped by a crescent-shaped element or tumi, flanked by two birds. The cat is the animal that expresses earthly power, and is flanked by condors. Condors connect with the upper world because they fly high, but because of their scavengers eating habits are also linked to the underworld or world of the dead. (UH)
