Sándor Petőfi (1823-1849) : National Song

Sándor Petőfi embodies the notions of freedom and poet in Hungarian literature. In his very direct poems, using everyday words with artistic power, he turned folk poetry into literature. He left a world literature-ranking and size oeuvre at the end of his short life. His works are translated in most languages of the world he’s the most famous Hungarian poet abroad. He wrote the National Song on 13th March 1848, when the waves of the revolution reached Vienna. On the 15th March (now National Holiday) as one of the leaders of the insurrection he recited more times his propagandist and mobilizing poem. It is not a coincidence that on the first day of the revolution this poem became one of the most important products of the free press. Thousands of leaflets were published of it, its text was published by all the papers, it was translated to German and French in a few days. According to the recollections of the contemporaries this manuscript was the basis of typesetting: it is considered as one of our national relics. The bequest of Sándor Petőfi, after whom the Museum was named, is looked after in a special collection in the Archive of Manuscripts.

Petőfi Sándor a szabadságeszmének és a költő fogalmának megtestesítője a magyar irodalomban. Közvetlen hangvételű, köznyelvi kifejezéseket művészi erővel alkalmazó költeményeiben irodalmivá lényegítette a népköltészetet. Rövid élete végén világirodalmi rangú s méretű életművet hagyott hátra, verseit a világ legtöbb nyelvére lefordították, külföldön ő a legismertebb magyar költő. A Nemzeti dalt 1848. március 13-án, az európai forradalmi hullám Bécsbe érkezése napján vetette papírra. Március 15-én a pesti népfelkelés vezéreként a lázadó ifjúságot buzdítva többször elszavalta agitatív, mozgósító erejű költeményét. Nem véletlen, hogy a forradalom első napján szabaddá vált sajtó egyik termékévé is a Nemzeti dal lett, több ezer röplapot nyomtattak belőle, szövegét csaknem valamennyi újság közölte, pár napon belül németre és franciára is lefordították. A kortársak emlékezete szerint, ez a kéziratlap volt a szedés alapja: nemzeti ereklyéink közt tartjuk számon. A múzeum névadója, Petőfi Sándor hagyatékát kiemelt különgyűjteményként gondozzuk a Kézirattárban.
