Rubin Museum of Art

Rubin Museum of Art
New York, United States

If represented in a bronze, the Five Buddhas are often only recognizable by their distinctive hand gestures, as none of their other characteristics are depicted. Buddha Ratnasambhava performs the gesture of giving (varadamudra) and presides over the southern direction. His family symbol is the jewel, associating him with wealth and, when in the form of a triple jewel, Buddhist teachings; his color is yellow, which also is the color of the southern direction; and his vehicle is the horse, also one of the auspicious Seven Jewels of a universal monarch. His five-pointed crown signifies the Five Buddhas.
