This modern-life picture shows a prostitute in her lodgings, overcome with remorse for her situation. Her condition is shown by her gaudy cloak, the shabby dressing table with jewellery and money strewn across it, and the man's glove and walking stick on the floor. The view through the window also alludes to her corruption. We see Waterloo Bridge and the Strand, on the right, which was a well known area of prostitution. Even the sickly-looking plant by the woman's side alludes to her impending doom.
