In Victor Hugo’s epic novel 'Les Miserables' (1862), Fantine is the mother of Cosette, an illegitimate daughter who is taken from her to live with cruel foster parents. Fantine is befriended by Jean Valjean, the hero of the novel, who rescues the child. This picture was painted during the 1880s when the artist was in Paris.

- Artist biographical information: Though few of her works survive, Hall seems to have specialised in realistic-style paintings dealing with social problems. She was the daughter of Alderman Bernard Hall J P, Major of Liverpool. In her twenties she travelled around the world visiting countries as far away as Egypt and Japan. In order to receive the best artistic training she studied in Paris for five years. She exhibited this work at the Paris Salon in 1886 and it was awarded an honourable mention. Whilst living in Paris she also exhibited with the Union of Female Painters.
